A reflection on Proverbs 16:18 inspired by Dr. Wil Stelzer of Our Savior New American School
The new year brings fresh beginnings, renewed energy, and—at Our Savior New American School—a weekly reminder of God’s truth. As Dr. Wil Stelzer shared with the students, Proverbs 16:18 speaks with a clarity that children and adults alike need to hear:
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
This isn’t just a warning. It’s a loving invitation from God to walk in humility, to recognize His hand in our lives, and to remember that every gift we have comes from Him.
Learning from King Nebuchadnezzar: A Lesson Kids Understand
Dr. Stelzer told the students the story of King Nebuchadnezzar, one of the most powerful rulers in history. He had everything—wealth, authority, a magnificent palace, and influence over countless people. But he also had something dangerous: pride.
Nebuchadnezzar began to believe that he was the source of his greatness. He forgot that God was the One who placed him in his position. And in that pride, he fell—hard. God humbled him, giving him the mind of a beast. For seven long years he lived like an animal, until he finally looked up and acknowledged the truth:
God is the One who gives power, wisdom, and life.
Only then was he restored.
Kids grasp this story quickly. They understand what it feels like to think, “I did this all by myself!” They also understand how quickly things can go wrong when pride takes over. Nebuchadnezzar’s story shows them that humility isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom.
Why This Matters for Children Today
In a world that constantly tells kids to “believe in yourself,” Scripture teaches something deeper and far more freeing:
Everything we have—our minds, our talents, our successes—is a gift from God.
When children learn this truth early, they grow into young men and women who:
- Celebrate their accomplishments without becoming boastful
- Recognize God’s hand in their abilities
- Treat others with kindness and respect
- Understand that humility leads to strength, not shame
- Give glory to God rather than seeking it for themselves
This is the heart of Proverbs 16:18. Pride pulls us down. Humility lifts us up.
How Classical Christian Education Shapes Humble, Confident Students
At Our Savior New American School, this truth isn’t just taught—it’s woven into every part of the learning experience.
A classical Christian education helps children:
- See the world through the lens of Scripture
- Understand history, literature, and science as part of God’s grand design
- Develop strong minds without developing proud hearts
- Learn virtue alongside knowledge
- Grow in wisdom, not just information
Students are encouraged to think deeply, speak clearly, and live faithfully. They learn that excellence is a way to honor God—not themselves. And they discover that humility is the foundation of true greatness.
This is the kind of education that shapes character, strengthens faith, and prepares children to shine in a world that desperately needs light.
